Actress Horikita Maki (22) has officially been announced as the star of an upcoming NHK morning drama, confirming a rumor from earlier this month. The drama is titled “Umechan-sensei” and is an original story written by Ozaki Masaya (“Kekkon Dekinai Otoko,” “Oniyome Nikki”).

The story is set in the devastated area of Kamata, Tokyo, in 1945 just after the end of the war. Horikita plays Shimomura Umeko, the youngest of three siblings whose father is a doctor at a university hospital. Compared to her outstanding sister Matsuko and brother Takeo, she lacks self-confidence, but an incident makes her determined to become a local doctor. However, her path is fraught with failures.

Horikita will play the character from the age of 16 up to her mid-30s. This is the first time that she has been cast as a doctor.

Filming is scheduled to begin in November of this year. The series will last 156 episodes, starting on April 2, 2012.

Horikita Maki, Ito Hideaki and the rest of the cast for the stage play Joan of Arc attended a press event on 30th June. Horikita plays the title role of the saint who died at the young age of 19. This being her first stage work, Horikita said,”I don’t have the confidence yet and feel anxious but I will work hard so that I can stand on stage with full confidence.” She also revealed that she has recently started weight training to build up her strength.

While Joan was embroiled in crusades, what was Hideaki doing when he was 17? “Listening to Ozaki Yutaka with the thought of ‘I don’t wanna go to school!’, but still going obediently anyway,”he replied laughing. Asked about his red eyes, he replied that he had stayed up watching the Japan-Paraguay World Cup game. With a lady? “Unfortunately no, it was with guy friends. I can’t say this too loudly but I’m in the process of looking (for a girlfriend)!” he replied, a little extra appeal to ladies interested in watching the play.

Joan of Arc runs at Akasaka ACT Theatre in Tokyo from 30 November to 19 December and at Umeda Arts Theatre in Osaka from 24 to 28 December. Tickets go on sale from 3 July.

Last November, it was announced that Maki Horikita (21) and Kenichi Matsuyama (24) were co-starring in a movie tentatively called “Nakushita Kioku,” directed by American filmmaker Hans Canosa. On Sunday, a press conference was held to announce the film’s release window and official title.

The picture will be titled “Dareka ga Watashi ni Kiss wo Shita” and is slated for theatrical release in March 2010. Based on the novel “Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac” by American author Gabrielle Zevin, the story tells of a high school student (Horikita) who loses part of her memory in an accident.

Although the movie is in Japanese, Horikita’s character attends an international school, so about 40% of her lines are in English. She commented that she was surprised when she first saw the script, and she had a lot of trouble with the English lines. However, Canosa praised her, saying that she has the potential to become an international star.

NEWS member Yuya Tegoshi (21) and American actor Anton Yelchin (20) have also been cast in the movie.

TOKYO —Atress Maki Horikita, 20, is challenging a role not many young actresses would be excited about. In Fuji TV’s new drama, “Atashinchi no Danshi,” Horikita will play Chisato, a girl who disguises herself as a homeless person to escape a 100 million yen debt after her father turned his back on her. With a dirty face and disheveled clothing, Horikita shows a side of herself audiences have yet to see.

“I’m really happy to play a variety of different roles. When on location, some staff did’t recognize me and wouldn’t come close because I looked smelly,” she said.

The drama centers around Chisato, who becomes a mother for the six sons (Jun Kaname, Osamu Mukai, Yoshinori Okada, Yusuke Yamamoto, Kohji Seto and Tomoki Okayama) of a toy company president in return for having her debt paid off. A smiling Horikita commented, “I was so happy to think that I’ve just turned 20 and I’m already playing the role of a mother.”

When asked the obligatory question about a potential future romance between her character and one of the six sons, she flatly denied the possibility, saying “Everyone [the characters] has a lot of problems to deal with, and it’s just not possible with any of them.”

The drama will air Wednesdays at 9 p.m., starting April 14.

It has been decided that GIRL NEXT DOOR’s upcoming single “Infinity” will be used as the theme song of the Fuji TV drama series “Atashinchi no Danshi,” which stars actress Maki Horikita. The drama is a comedy about a homeless 20-year-old girl who suddenly marries a company president and becomes the “mother” of six handsome but unusual sons.

This is the second time that GIRL NEXT DOOR has done a theme song for a television drama. Last year, they sang “Jonetsu no Daisho” for the TV Asahi series “Giragira.” “Infinity” will be released on June 3.

Actress Maki Horikita, 20, joined the crowd in donning a pair of 3D glasses for a special screening of “Nat’s Space Adventure 3D” held at a Tokyo movie theater recently. Horikita supplies the Japanese voice for the main character – a young fly called Nat who, with his buddies I.Q. and Scooter, sneaks aboard the rocket carrying Apollo 11 before its launch to the moon in 1969.

The animated 3D film, known as “Fly Me to the Moon” in the West, is directed by Ben Stassen, 50, who came to Japan for the special preview. The Belgian director said: “I’ve just met Maki, but she is beautiful and has a great voice. I’d like to use her sexy voice for the sea turtle in my second animated movie ‘Around the World in 50 Days.’”

After watching the movie, Horikita said: “Even though I knew what was going to happen, it was really entertaining having things fly out in 3D.” She added that she now likes flies and can no longer pick up a fly swat.

“Nat’s Space Adventure 3D” opens in cinemas on March 28.

Actress Maki Horikita will take on a very different role for her next TV drama. She is starring in an untitled Fuji TV series which partly has her playing a homeless person.

In the drama, Horikita’s character is burdened with 100 million yen worth of debt after her gambling father disappears. Chased out of her home by collectors, she is forced to sleep in places like internet cafes. However, she meets the president of a major company who offers to pay off the debt if she marries him, and she soon finds herself moving in with a rather eccentric family.

Fuji TV will air the show on Tuesdays at 9:00pm, starting in April.
